Extended Abstract:
Introduction
With the expansion of social networks, book bloggers have emerged as influential figures in shaping users' attitudes toward reading and book selection. This study aims to explore the role of book bloggers in influencing book choices among Instagram users. As social media platforms continue to transform content consumption patterns, book bloggers have become key players in recommending books, fostering reading communities, and impacting purchasing decisions.
Methodology
This research adopts a descriptive-survey approach, targeting Instagram users who actively follow book bloggers' accounts. A convenience sampling method was employed, leading to 200 users responding to an online questionnaire consisting of 35 Likert-scale questions. The collected data were analyzed using statistical methods via SPSS software, and thematic analysis was applied for qualitative insights. The study seeks to answer four key questions regarding users' preferences, influential factors in book selection, the impact of following book bloggers on reading habits, and criteria for choosing which book blogger to follow.
Findings and Discussion
The results indicate that while book bloggers exert a moderate influence on users' book selection, many users still adhere to their personal tastes. Factors such as visual appeal, engagement levels, and content quality significantly impact follower retention, with content quality playing a more crucial role than aesthetic appeal. While bloggers’ book recommendations influence purchasing decisions, they serve as just one of several selection criteria, alongside personal preferences and peer recommendations.
Users reported that following book bloggers had a positive impact on their reading habits, encouraging them to explore new genres and authors. However, direct interaction with bloggers and participation in blogger-led events remained limited, suggesting that while bloggers facilitate book discovery, they do not necessarily cultivate deep, interactive relationships with followers. The study also highlights that blogger popularity is not solely determined by follower count; rather, authenticity, expertise, and high-quality content contribute more significantly to their credibility.
In terms of book selection, trust in bloggers' opinions was identified as a key factor. However, users were also cautious about potential commercial biases, distinguishing between genuine recommendations and paid promotions. While negative reviews could influence purchase decisions, they were not always decisive. Furthermore, the study found that engagement strategies, such as personalized book recommendations and interactive discussions, could enhance a blogger’s credibility and influence.
Theoretical Implications
The findings align with influencer marketing theories, suggesting that perceived authenticity and expertise are stronger determinants of influence than sheer visibility. This study also supports media engagement theories, which emphasize how interactive and participatory content enhances user trust. Drawing on concepts from networked publics and digital word-of-mouth marketing, the research underscores the growing role of social media in shaping reading habits.
Practical Implications
From a practical standpoint, the study provides valuable insights for publishers, authors, and book bloggers:
· Publishers should leverage collaborations with credible book bloggers who demonstrate high engagement and expertise.
· Book bloggers can increase their impact by enhancing content quality, diversifying engagement formats, and fostering interactive communities.
· Authors can benefit from targeted influencer marketing campaigns to promote their books effectively.
Conclusion
Book bloggers on Instagram contribute positively to book selection and promotion of reading culture. However, their effectiveness depends on content quality, audience trust, and strategic engagement. While their recommendations shape users' book choices, they are most impactful when perceived as authentic and knowledgeable voices rather than mere advertisers. This research provides a foundation for future studies on social media-driven reading habits, urging further exploration into algorithmic influence, long-term reading behavior changes, and cross-platform engagement trends.
