چکیده English

Subject Matter
Virtual streamers, commonly known as AI-driven digital avatars or virtual YouTubers (VTubers), emerged as transformative tools in the digital marketing ecosystem, particularly in live-streaming commerce, where they facilitated dynamic, non-physical interactions distinct from traditional human-led streams. These entities, powered by advanced motion capture technology and artificial intelligence, gained significant traction, especially in East Asia, by delivering unique performances that blended entertainment with real-time audience engagement, fundamentally altering consumer expectations and experiences (Lu et al., 2021; Wang, 2025). The integration of AI enhanced their ability to exhibit realistic, human-like personalities, enabling personalized interactions that positively influenced brand image and consumer engagement in live commerce environments (Xu et al., 2025). However, challenges such as concerns over authenticity, data privacy, and algorithmic biases persisted, posing potential barriers to their widespread adoption (Chi, 2024). Virtual streamers impacted e-commerce by leveraging perceived credibility, trustworthiness, and attractiveness to drive online sales, though outcomes varied due to differing consumer responses (Ji, 2024; Gao et al., 2023). This phenomenon marked a paradigm shift in marketing strategies, as businesses increasingly utilized virtual influencers to enhance brand visibility and foster deeper consumer connections (Nalbant et al., 2023; Gross, 2024). The synergy of virtual streamers, AI, and digital marketing reshaped entertainment paradigms, with AI enabling sophisticated data analysis for tailored content delivery and precise audience targeting, critical for marketing effectiveness (Chi, 2024; Mahakal, 2023). AI's role in automating marketing processes and providing actionable consumer insights revolutionized the field, though it raised ethical concerns like privacy and transparency, requiring careful management (Kar, 2023; Girsawale et al., 2024; Sun & Tang, 2024). As their popularity surged, virtual streamers’ ability to influence purchase decisions through immersive experiences became vital in e-commerce, promising innovative brand-audience engagement (Ji, 2024; Li, 2024; Nalbant et al., 2023; Tiautrakul & Jindakul, 2019).
Purpose
The purpose of this research was to systematically identify and analyze the antecedents and consequences of virtual streamers within the digital marketing ecosystem, with a specific focus on the role of advanced artificial intelligence technologies in shaping their functionality, addressing associated challenges, and influencing broader marketing outcomes for brands and consumers.
Method
The study employed a qualitative, exploratory research design grounded in interpretive philosophy, utilizing thematic analysis to uncover intricate patterns related to virtual streamers’ dynamics. The statistical population included digital marketing experts, such as university faculty from Tehran, Shahid Beheshti, and Semnan Universities specializing in interactive marketing, digital branding, and virtual anthropomorphism, senior managers from startups in streaming, content production, and virtual reality, and professional users with direct experience in AI-equipped virtual streaming platforms; selection criteria required relevant expertise, practical project involvement, or over three years of managerial experience. A sample of 26 participants was selected using the snowball sampling method until theoretical saturation was achieved, marked by repetitive codes after the 17th interview. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews using the "Semi-Structured Interview Protocol for Virtual Streamers in Digital Marketing" (designed by the research team, 2025), which probed antecedents (e.g., success factors, AI-driven behavioral changes) and consequences (e.g., trust, authenticity, challenges). Validity was ensured through triangulation across sources, including government managers, academics, and marketing specialists, supplemented by theoretical literature reviews, and a quality control process where preliminary findings were member-checked with interviewees for accuracy. Reliability was maintained by clearly defining terms, pilot-testing questions for clarity, and using motivational interview designs with post-analysis feedback loops. Thematic analysis followed Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six phases—data familiarization, initial coding, theme searching, theme reviewing, defining and naming themes, and final reporting—conducted manually without software specification.
Results
The findings identified six overarching antecedent themes derived from 180 initial codes and 30 organizing themes: technological advancements and design, including AI progress, human-like aesthetics, system quality, responsiveness, attractiveness, and accessibility, which underpinned virtual streamers’ emergence; interactions and anthropomorphism, encompassing behavioral, emotional, and cognitive human-likeness fostering para-social and emotional engagements; impact on consumer behavior and brand perception, driven by personalization, trust enhancement, purchase intent, experience improvement, loyalty, and performance; challenges and threats, such as privacy concerns, algorithmic biases, transparency issues, expectation violations, authenticity doubts, costs, competition, and audience loss risks; audience expectations and perceptions, differing in professional, emotional, non-physical, continuous access, and social interaction dimensions compared to human streamers; and success or failure factors, including interaction quality, credibility, innovation, regional popularity, and behavior prediction. Consequences were categorized into five themes from 100 initial codes and 20 organizing themes: influence on consumer behavior, with increased purchase intent, refined shopping experiences, preference shifts, and predictable patterns via emotional and social presence; effects on brand image and loyalty, through reputation enhancement, fidelity reinforcement, and engagement boosts; impacts on trust and authenticity, where human-like features strengthened cognitive and emotional trust, though inauthenticity risked reductions; contributions to sales and marketing performance, including sales uplifts, targeting precision, and conversion rate improvements; and challenges and limitations, such as trust erosion and operational hurdles from unmet expectations. Virtual streamers enhanced consumer trust, engagement, and brand loyalty through AI-driven, human-like interactions but faced barriers like privacy and authenticity concerns that could limit effectiveness.
Conclusions
The study concluded that brands should prioritize human-like designs, emotional interactions, data transparency, and high-quality content in virtual streamer strategies to maximize their digital marketing potential while mitigating risks related to privacy and authenticity. Ongoing empirical research and adaptive frameworks were recommended to address AI’s evolving challenges and leverage opportunities for innovative consumer-brand interactions in the digital marketing landscape.
