This article is a review of the trajectory of the concept of communication through academic teachings in Iran. First studies in this field were based on the two terms of “mass communication means” and “media”. The first was accepted by late Dr. Mo'tamed-Nezhad and the latter was accepted by late Dr. Majid Tehranian. This difference in the choosing of the words did not come solely from a difference on the hardware and the communication technologies; it’s also related to social aspects of language and the way terms are filled with meanings. The word equivalent to “media” in Farsi was filled with meanings that didn’t exist in Farsi before. The study uses the related history and documents to explore the evolution of the concepts through the works of Mo'tamed-Nezhad and Tehranian who were both the founders of communication studies in Iran. Referring to the foundation of the Faculty of Communication Sciences and the launch of the quarterly journal of “New Media Studies”, I will discuss the new expectation from the science of communication and the new media. I will do a comparative historical work to argue that in the study of new media, both hardware and software evolutions in the field of media and communication should be considered.

The development of the Internet as a modern communication technology has raised new, important and different issues regarding the relation between this technology and the public sphere. In this paper, based on Habermaus’s theory, we have proposed four fundamental questions about the possibility and impossibility of development of the public sphere in the cyberspace in order to prepare a systematic review of the proposed theories. Based on the results of the study, it is possible to distinguish three different views toward the development of virtual public sphere: possibility, impossibility, and conditional nature of the formation of the virtual public sphere. The resultant of these three views is that despite the capacity of the cyberspace for the development of virtual public sphere, there are still important challenges such as the digital divide, polarization, cyberspace fragmentation, anonymity, and loosening of the real social ties. In addition, closer study of the relation between cyberspace and public sphere requires us to avoid technological determinism, and consider the institutional and social contexts and perform comparative studies on different social and institutional contexts

This study attempted to understand the features and factors associated with representation of privacy among the Facebook users and its cultural consequences. To achieve this goal, first, we studied the cultural and semantic perceptions of the users about the concept of privacy in order to provide a basis for the study of representation, concealment and protection of privacy among the users. In order to understand cultural patterns, we used virtual ethnography. Through the fieldwork we performed online and offline ethnographical interviews with 21 active Facebook users in different intervals. The findings of this study indicated a core feature to be the diversity of the cultural definitions of the users of the concept of privacy. It is based on two factors of “tendency to represent” and “tendency to hide”. The synonyms of these concepts in social interactions are “tendency to view” and “tendency to review”.

In this paper, we have tried to investigate the construction process of the feminine self on Facebook. In this regard, using Qualitative Content Analysis method, we have checked out Facebook profiles of 20 professional users. The results indicate optimistic approach toward the presence of women on Facebook. In other words, while traditional gender stereotypes assume women to be emotional, obedient, passive, dependent, and attractive, female professional users have presented themselves as active, independent, powerful, and critical of existing social conditions in different parts of their Facebook profile such as posts on the wall, profile photos, privacy settings, profile names, comments, friends, and groups. So, to some extent we can see breaks in the boundaries of binary-gender on Facebook.

In this study we have compared narrative structure of Disney animations and their respective computer-games as their by-products. The purpose of this research is to identify how the meanings created by these two structures related to each other. In this study, we used Vladimir Propp's and Lévi-Strauss's approaches. Based on Lévi-Strauss's views, narratives have a structure which creates special meanings to resolve conflicts symbolically. Vladimir Propp's narratology was used in performing a syntagmatic analysis and the study of the way Ingredients were combined in the narrative structure. Using Lévi-Strauss's binary oppositions we did a paradigmatic analysis in order to determine the meaning made by the narrative structures. The methodology of this study is based on a structured study of the text which was done using Propp's method of narratology. The results show that the narrative structure of the animations which is based on value-based judgment changes to value-based responsibilities in the games. In the animations, a way of living is judged to be positive and a symbolic solution for the conflict between good and evil. In the respective video games, this way of living becomes the responsibility of the players. In fact the narrative structure of the games makes the players adhere to the values introduced in the animations.

This study intends to explore the structure and content of the cultural messages on the website of Allameh Tabataba'i University. As the main question of the research, we are looking for the content and structural characteristics of the textual or visual messages posted on the website. We used quantitative content analysis for this goal. The statistical population includes all of the textual and visual messages posted on the website throughout the second 6 months of the year 1393. We did not use sampling in this research and studied the whole population. The results show that the most number of messages were posted in the month of Azar and they were highlighted with pictures. More frequently the pictures are journalistic photos and they are less frequently archive photos. This indicates the activeness of the staff of the website and the fact that the website is kept updated. Graphic designs have been important in informative posters. The cultural deputy and then the students have made the most headlines. Only few stories have covered news on the dean of the university and the head of the Leader’s Office. This shows that the website does not revolve around individuals and the stories are chosen based on their news values. National as well as religious messages have been taken seriously. The main part of the website has been dealing with news and cultural stories. So it can be concluded that it has focused on its central duties and hasn’t gotten involved with trivial issues. Based on the theory of Telic Systems by Parsons, the majority of the messages follow the model of hidden system of organizing and controlling tensions. Among the communication theories, agenda setting is the theory based on which most of the cultural messages have been written. Since the audiences are mostly students, most messages deal with student affairs and cultural activities of the students. Also the messages include informative materials, reports on cultural activities, national and religious occasions and they include Quran verses and religious quotes and stories.
